Sensitivity of the Median- Ulnar Motor Comparative Techniques in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
ABSTRACT Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common entrapment syndrome. Median-ulnar motor comparative technique with Median motor technique in carpal tunnel syndrome were studied. In 50 patients with 72 hands with clinically defined carpal tunnel syndrome and electrophysilogic evidence of Median neuropathy at wrist based upon a prolonged sensory nerve distal latency with 30 asymptomatic voluntaries underwent median-ulnar motor comparative technique and median motor technique testing protocol. Upper limit of normal for median-ulnar latency difference was 0.7 ms. Diagnostic sensitivities were 90.3% for routine median motor technique and 94.5% for median-ulnar motor technique. This technique is easly performed and require minimal effort to incorporate into commonly used technique routine. This may be advantageous when a concomitant polyneuropathy is present and this may also help avoid technical pitfalls and aid in idendification of anatomic variants

Ulnar Nerve Changes Associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Not Affecting Median Versus Ulnar Comparative Studies
Objective: The present study was conducted to assess the involvement of ulnar sensory and/or motor nerve fibers in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and whether this affects the accuracy of the median versus ulnar comparative tests. Patients and methods: The present study included 145 CTS hands and 71 asymptomatic control hands. Clinical examination was done. The following tests were d...
متن کاملMedian--ulnar nerve communications and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome in the presence of anomalous median to ulnar nerve communications in the forearm produces a characteristic change in motor conduction studies. Median nerve stimulation at the elbow evokes a thenar muscle action potential (MAP) with an initial positive deflection not seen on stimulation at the wrist. In 63 patients this change occurred in 16 (25%) and is a useful additiona...
متن کاملMotor amplitude of median nerve with stimulation in the palm a reliable indicator for axonal loss in carpal tunnel syndrome
Background and Aim: The present study aimed to use the median nerve compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude by stimulation at the palm instead of abductor pollicis brevis (APB) needle electromyography (EMG) for determining a sign of axonal loss in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods and Materials/Patients: This study was performed on 180 patients with CTS referred to ...
متن کاملCarpal Tunnel Syndrome and Median Nerve Lesions
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is by far the most common cause of median nerve damage. The carpal tunnel is an anatomical compartment of the hand; it is bounded on three sides by carpal bones which form an arch, and on the palmar side by the transverse carpal ligament. Pathogenesis CTS results from compromise of median nerve function at the wrist, caused by increased pressure in the carpal tunnel...
